Firstly, Thank you for your interest in Australians for Mercury Free Dentistry, the newly formed Australian Chapter of the global coalition The World Alliance for Mercury Free Dentistry.

As an Australian, a dental professional and a mother I founded this organization with the goal to see the Australian Government support a United Nations Treaty to phase out mercury based products around the world. There is a real chance this will be agreed and come into effect by 2013.

Dental amalgam is made of about 50% mercury, which is a well known neurotoxin, also causing birth defects and kidney damage. (UNEP 2002) Mercury is also detrimental to the environment, contaminating waterways and marine life with dental amalgam being the number one cause of mercury pollution in wastewater. (EPA 2004)

The aim of Australians for Mercury Free Dentistry is to be a voice in the Treaty negotiations arguing the case to protect public health and the environment as an informed alternative viewpoint to the pro-amalgam Australian Dental Association and Australian dental amalgam manufacturers.

I have been a dentist for over 25 years (for 23 of which I have been a mercury free dentist) and have witnessed the complete lack of education that is given to dental professionals about the risks of amalgam fillings. This means that dentists, their staff and their patients have not been informed of associated health risks from being exposed to mercury and its negative environmental impact. As such our goals are to not only instigate change but to educate the public and professionals alike on the dangers of mercury amalgam and for the introduction of safer and cost effective alternatives to become mainstream in dental practice in private and public sectors.

Australians for Mercury Free Dentistry has been established to:

  • Oppose the use of toxic mercury amalgams for dental fillings, and their consequent effect on health and the environment.
  • Educate dentists and the general public about the dangers mercury amalgam fillings pose to health and the environment.
  • Lobby for a phase out of dental amalgams in Australia.
  • Lobby for the UN Global Convention on phasing out mercury based products and its     inclusion of dental amalgam.

In order to help us reach our goals and pave the way for positive change I ask you to please register as a member and if possible make a donation to Australians for Mercury Free Dentistry.

Thank you for supporting this campaign,

Dr. Lisa Matriste
